Warm Ouray Ice Climbing

A very warm ice climbing trip with Leigh, Mike and Tom. Had a great time trying out the new gear: cobras worked great on the ice - not so well on the rock. (Thin cover in the New Funtier at this time of year.) The baruntses rubbed a bit, but I need to work them in before Rainier anyway. Lead a short wall-at, as Mike says, a 4th grade level-but pulled a couple clean big wall ascents in the Alcove in the pouring ice melt.

Kwanis Cabin Night Ski

Mike, Tom and I headed out on Friday night at 8pm in the dark for a lap up on Sandia Ski Area. The night was still and warm (35 F), but the daytime temperatures left snow conditions terrible - 75 deg days = ice. We still made it up in about 40 minutes and then traversed to the Ellis Trail and bushwhacked to the Crest Trail through the forest. It's cool to watch your friends headlamps meandering through the snowy, nightscape. Not a cloud in the sky so when we hit the ridge and saw the city lights plus all the stars, I had to stop for a little bit to take it all in. Patchy snow up to the cabin wasn't too bad on the way up, and I drank a Guinness (St. Patty's Eve!) on the roof of the cabin while we watched the final tram head down for the night at 10:30pm. The small, bright light arced through the mountains on it's way back to civilization in the calm night. Mike pulled out the starmap app and we checked out mars, jupiter, and venus. Skiing down left a lot to be desired. This will be my last ski on Sandia for the season! We worked our way now the ice through weird deep patches in the trees to a clearing where the ice/snow mix left a maze of skiable patches of choppy ice. I fell a couple times but managed to make it through the clearing, only walking on the grass once. The others weren't so lucky. We didn't skin up for the trail back to the ski area, but rather tried to keep our speed up along the icy trail. A little scary at higher speeds through the dense trees because I was leading by ~120 W headlamp. A couple herringbones later, and we caught a line down skier's left in the resort. The ice layer was chopped up halfway down by a groomer to everyone's delight, but Mike still convinced me to ski a line of iced up moguls for no reason. I smirked when I ran it clean and he crashed three times on the way down. Split boarders...think they know everything. I'm also guessing this is how he ended the day with 2 bent poles. For Tom's first season, he did awesome! Very impressed with his progress. Back at the car at 11:35pm. Great time guys!

Half cow, half lobster, half man! The cowman has arrived!!!

Trying to jump into the top spot, I borrowed Martin's ski suit to gain the 2-5% on aero. Didn't end up working, but I did look like an idiot!

4:57!!! Great weather and a great race. Took 2nd in my age group and 23rd overall.

Race Results

Bike up: 64:07
Run up: 56:16
Ski up: 39:16
Shoe up: 25:42
TOTAL UP: 3:05:20

Shoe down: 10:36
Ski down: 21:44
Run down: 45:01
Bike down: 34:56
TOTAL DOWN: 1:52:17

TOTAL RACE: 4:57:36

The bike started great. I held the front group through town and was proud to keep Jason in close sight for the first few miles. Around the prison, the first and 2nd splits occurred. I was dropped by both and was cursing riding alone up the hill. Passed by a couple other guys, but linked up with the 3rd group. Struggled hard to stay with that group, but absolutely refused to drop out of the draft. Maxed my heart rate for 5-10 min up the 2nd climb. Found a big guy to draft on the downhill and caught a little breather there. Final climb was great. Stayed with the group and basically hugged the female winner's rear tire to the top. I was completely exhausted at this point and my feet were frozen. Transition was fairly quick but forgot to take out bike tools so wasted a few seconds running back to drop them off. Feet didn't thaw until 2 miles into the run when they started tingling.

I had to put the breaks on for the up run, ski, and shoe because I could feel my legs tightening up and ready to cramp. Slammed a GU on all transitions, but couldn't get anything down while pushing hard. Found someone who was paced well at about mile 2 on the run. Had to let him get away on the climb because it was too much for my legs. Courtney from AMRC gave me a little cheer at the ski transition which I certainly appreciated - everything helps! I was surprised that I lost a place on the ski because I expected to be one of the quicker folks on that section. My camelbak was frozen at the run/ski transition though so I had to rely on water stations for the entire upper mountain section.

I couldn't run the snowshoe because as soon as I started jogging quads, hamstrings, and calves all started to seize up. I was passed by at least two on the shoe up, but ran past Tom from AMRC (who summitted 7 seconds ahead of me!) and one other guy on the down shoe. Cramped on the way down but still managed to jog some of it.

Ski transition was slow, but raced the downhill well. Passed by someone on skate skis on the flats but I repassed him on the 2nd hairpin when he crashed. Clean run with some good tucking at the top. Rehydrated on run transition. The volunteers were kind enough to give my hamstring a mini-massage while I finished up tying my shoes.

The final 5 mi run was brutal and nearly wiped out a couple times on the steep. Held the gap on the guy ahead of me but still got blasted by a real runner at about mile 3. I looked at my watch at the halfway water station and realized that I could pull off a 5 hr race if nothing went wrong. That helped me push to the bike transition. The volunteers had my bike waiting, my shoes by the bench, and my pack ready. Didn't bother with the jacket, bike tools, or extra layer of socks and just jumped.

Thanks for all the training fun Jason!

Practiced the bike/run transition at the La Luz TH. Hip flexor is definitely sore again. This is going to be a painful race.

Avy re-cert at the gravel pit couloir with low angle rescue. I was on strike team and botched clearing the field for the beacon search by chasing a rope to a "dead" body.

At least I got a free tree ski out of the day!

After Todd's raucous b-day celebrations at the Taos House, I got up about 6am, packed up my sleeping pad and bag, and headed up to the ski area. Skinned and skied while ski patrol bombed Kachina. Got up above the Phoenix, transitioned, and crashed on the turn onto the return trail. Quick ski but, back at the car, realized that I managed to lose my skins somewhere on the mountain. YEA, unplanned, extra training! Transitioned to boots and ran back up the mountain. Found the skins at the bottom of trail (phew!), but ran up 3/4 miles for good measure anyway.

Caught 5th chair, but was the first on the backside. Tore up the groomer at 65 mph with my Volkl race skis.

(Big)

Ran gates at NASTAR, but didn't do well: 24.52 handicap... Silver.

Skied a few new lines in Taos: the sunbaked Twin Trees, thin Walkyries Chute, and, surprisingly, Hildalgo. Met up with Nate, Grant, Todd, Kat, Mai and skied the backside for a while. Good to play around with friends... finally, hucked the small cliff under 4.

Final run on the ridge with great glow over Wheeler. Drove back home into the blinding sunset.

Got home exhausted and decided to check my phone. New text: "2nd mission..." Oh, shit. Unpack, repack, food, water, go. 5 stranded hikers 14-16 years old; one with broke leg. News. Official. Justin led us on a goose hunt up Embudo Canyon, so after directing the chopper to the kids, we trail-ran all the way back to incident base. I was burned at this point so I pounded about 500+ calories in GU, GoPros, fruit leather, and other bars, and set out to find the kids. Found them up the north face with the rest of the AMRC team. Escorted them down on a trail I came across--the only thing that I contributed for the night--into the arms of their parents.

On the drive back, I thought I was obeying the law, but still managed to get pulled over. Basically the last thing that I needed to have happen at 2am after a brutal day of exercise. Apparently my left headlight was out. The van's falling apart at an increasing rate.

Quad Training - Weekend of 1-7-12

Saturday, hurting already, I got up early biked to the AMRC unloading for Cabela's gear. Biked home for a total of 24 mi of riding. Ran 4.5 miles in 45 minutes, and then went to Kerry's for steaks and beers before getting the 2nd shipment of 60 pallets of gear unloaded from 8-10:30pm.

Sunday, Jeanne came over to join in the 5 fingers ride. Our version of the bike included trips up Copper, Indian School to Embudo, Candelaria to White Wash parking, Simms to Elena Gallegos, and Tramway to the Tram. Had to rewarm toes at tram because 35 deg weather with blizzard and beastly Easterlies.
